Sol tea is the Botanical Biohacking version of the classical formula "Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang" -- a four-ingredient combination dating back nearly two thousand years to the Chinese medicine classical text Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Diseases caused by Cold). It is as notable for its power as its simplicity, using some of the safest ingredients in the pharmacopoeia to treat some of the most complicated and chronic illnesses of its time.
Traditional Use
Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang is originally indicated for recovery from severe illness after harsh therapeutic methods such as vomiting and purging have been used. The patient is no longer acutely ill, but is still very weak and is susceptible to relapse or chronic disease if not properly fortified. The description in the original classic text describes a scenario where digestion is weak and the patient is susceptible to bloating, experiences dizziness when standing up, and after sweating feels a sensation of trembling or quivering. These patients may experience water retention, fatigue or exercise intolerance, and "air hunger" or breathing difficulties such as asthma...but tonics such as Cordyceps, Ginseng, Tangkuai or Astragalus make them feel worse. These patients are deficient in both Qi and Blood, but the first herbs we reach for to build them back up just make them retain more pathological Dampness.
From a modern perspective, where patients have been taking antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pain medicines for many years, destroying their healthy microbiomes and leading to asthma, steatohepatitis, edema, anemia and some kinds of dysautonomia, chronic fatigue, and cardiovascular problems, Ling Gui Zhu Gan tea can be an excellent way to gently recover and fortify the body. It is safe for long-term use and has a delicious sweet flavor.
