What is Gan Jiang?
Gan Jiang, or dried Ginger, is an acrid, warm herb, and is categorized as an “warm the interior and expel cold” herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
What are the benefits of Gan Jiang?
Gan Jiang / Dry Ginger is best known for its TCM function of warming the center of the body to expel cold. Practitioners often use Gan Jiang in cases of cold damage from exposure to cold foods, cold medicines like antibiotics which affect digestion, or excess cold-damp digestive problems like loose, watery diarrhea or inadequate production of stomach acid.
Gan Jiang is commonly recommended as an addition to other digestive formulas such as Chorus Capsules to increase their actions of warming & drying the Spleen, and transforming excess Dampness and Cold.
Because in addition to the Spleen and Stomach it also enters the Heart and Lung channels, Gan Jiang may be used for presentations of chronic thin, watery mucus production or cold extremities (the hands, feet, pelvic region and head).
What is the dosage and method for taking Gan Jiang?
Typical doses for concentrated Gan Jiang granules are 1 to 3 grams, taken 1 to 3 times per day.
Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions, as the dosage can vary based on your condition and response to treatment.
Granules dissolve best in hot water or other liquids; or may be added to dry flour mixes for baked goods to increase digestibility.
Does Gan Jiang have any side effects?
While Gan Jiang is generally considered safe for most people, it can cause side effects in some individuals. If you experience any digestive discomfort, reduce the dose or try an alternative herb.
As with any Chinese herb, we recommend consulting with a qualified practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) about Gan Jiang before any course of treatment is started.
