Watch: Dr. Park in His Own Words

Take three minutes to hear Josh tell the story of his own recovery from chronic illness — and the message of hope he most wants you to hear.

A Note From Will

Some of the best people in this medicine never tell you how good they are.

Dr. Joshua Park, in my humble opinion is one of the most gifted herbalists practicing in the United States today. The catch is that you would never hear him say that about himself. Josh is so genuine that his brilliance tends to slip past people.

I wanted to write this because our Skool community deserves to understand who is quietly in their corner. Josh is the practitioner who shows up early, stays late, and offers help before anyone thinks to ask for it.  His clinical and academic depth runs far deeper than most people realize, because he simply doesn't advertise it.

So let me do the bragging he never will. Here is who Josh is, what he has accomplished, and why having him as a resource inside this community is something you shouldn’t take for granted.

"Josh is one of those people who makes everyone around him better — not because he is trying to impress anyone, but because he genuinely cares about getting the medicine right."

— Will Sheppy

Part One

A Healer Who Was First a Patient

Dr. Joshua Park, DSOM, L.Ac

One of the things I respect most about Josh is that he came to this medicine the hard way  as a patient. He was diagnosed with a chronic digestive illness and told, flatly, that he would have to live with it for the rest of his life. As he puts it in his own words, that was simply not something he was willing to accept.

He knew that Traditional Chinese Medicine had a strong track record with chronic illness, so he decided to give it a try. He found a practitioner who specialized in digestive health, and despite having been severely ill for more than a year and a half, he saw a dramatic change in a very short time. He recovered completely. That experience was so profound and so transformative that, in his words, he knew he had found his life's work. I think that origin story matters, because it means Josh doesn't approach chronic illness as an abstraction. He has lived it. He knows what it feels like to be told there's no way out — and to find one anyway.

Part Two

Brilliant on Herbs  and Fluent in Two Languages of Medicine

When I say Josh is one of the leading herbalists in this country, I'm not being generous — I'm being accurate. Brehan Crawford, who has spent more than two decades in clinical practice and knows this field as well as anyone, considers him one of the finest herbalists in the United States. Brehan does not hand out that kind of praise casually. When he says it, he means it, and he says it without hesitation.

What makes Josh special isn't just that he knows a lot of formulas. Plenty of practitioners do. What sets him apart is that he understands why a formula exists its classical diagnostic logic, the way it has been modified across different lineages  and then he can turn around and explain the modern pharmacology behind it. His doctoral training focused on the theory and application of classical medical texts, the foundations most modern programs only skim. Then he spent four years inside a major hospital system, working shoulder to shoulder with MDs, where he had to articulate why a classical formula worked in terms that mapped onto Western pathophysiology.

Take a formula like Tong Xie Yao Fang. In classical terms, it addresses Liver qi overacting on the Spleen — the pattern behind a lot of stress-driven digestive trouble. Josh can explain that, and then walk you straight into the modern research showing how the same formula shifts the gut microbiome, regulates serotonin levels in the colon, and repairs the intestinal barrier. That dual fluency is genuinely rare, and it's exactly the kind of depth that members of this community get to tap into.

The Science Behind the Tradition

Tong Xie Yao Fang (TXYF) — the classical formula Josh co-authored a case report on — has been studied extensively. Research published in Frontiers in Pharmacology showed that TXYF modulates gut microbiota composition and lowers colonic serotonin (5-HT) levels in IBS-D model rats, with fecal transplantation confirming a causal link between the microbiota shifts and symptom relief (Li et al., 2018). A randomized clinical trial in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics confirmed TXYF granules outperformed placebo in patients with IBS-D (Chen et al., 2018). Josh's own case report in Convergent Points documented complete resolution of chronic IBS-D symptoms using a modified TXYF protocol within two weeks, applying multi-target mechanisms including gut-brain axis regulation, microbiota restoration, and gut barrier repair (Yang, Park & Ross, 2025). This is the caliber of knowledge Josh brings to the table.

Part Three

The Most Generous Person You'll Never Hear Brag

At the ASA Annual Conference

Here is the part Josh would never tell you himself, which is exactly why I have to. Every year at the ASA conference, Josh is there — and not on the main stage, even though he absolutely could be. He's in the hallways and at the tables, finding people who need help and simply helping them. He's the one pulling a colleague aside to work through a complicated herbal interaction. He's the one staying late to answer the questions nobody else had time for. I have watched him do this year after year, asking for nothing in return.

He has also been asked, repeatedly, to help teach seminars, and he has taught acupuncture and herbal classes at the university level — at Wongu University and Virginia University of Integrative Medicine. But you would almost never know it, because Josh doesn't promote himself. His humility is the real thing. It isn't false modesty or a humblebrag. It's simply who he is. And in a profession that can sometimes reward self-promotion over substance, that kind of character is rare and worth celebrating.

That same humility is why his brilliance so often goes unnoticed. People assume the quiet person in the corner can't possibly be one of the best in the room. With Josh, that assumption is exactly backwards. He treats knowledge as something to be shared, not hoarded — and when you meet someone like that, you hold on to them.

Part Four

The Last Resort That Becomes the Turning Point

Josh's clinical specialty is digestive disorders — irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and the broad category of chronic, often inflammatory, digestive illness. And here's something he shared that has stuck with me. When patients come to see him, he is usually their last resort. They've typically tried everything else and still aren't feeling better, so TCM becomes a kind of Hail Mary for them. But as Josh puts it, even though he's the last resort, he is very often what finally gives them the best results.

When I asked him what he loves most about the work, his answer said everything about who he is. He talked about how chronic illness shrinks a person's world — how the number of things you can do gets smaller and smaller until it feels like your whole life is contracting. His favorite part of practice, he said, is helping people expand their worlds again — getting them back to doing the things they love with the people they love, and watching that world gradually open back up. That, to me, is the heart of why he belongs in a community like ours.

That philosophy is also the spine of the book Josh co-authored, Hidden River: The Lost Science of Gut Ecology. The book treats gut health as a living ecosystem rather than a list of symptoms to suppress, following two healing journeys to show what becomes possible when you honor the body's deeper wisdom — the hidden connections between breath and bowels, stress and digestion, daily habits and gut resilience. If you've spent any time in this community, that "ecology over warfare" approach should sound familiar. It's exactly the framework Chorus for Life is built around.

Part Five

Why Having Josh in This Community Matters

Let me be direct, because I think it's important. When you join the Gut Brain Synchrony community, you are not just joining a support group. You're getting access to a clinical team that includes people like Josh — a practitioner with doctoral-level training, years of hospital-system experience treating oncology and complex chronic cases, peer-reviewed publications, and deep classical knowledge. That combination is rare anywhere. In a free online community, it's almost unheard of.

Josh has told me that the community aspect is what matters most to him. One of the biggest things he has learned from treating people with IBS, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's, and autoimmune conditions is that isolation makes everything worse. When someone can learn from other people's journeys, share what's working, and get real clinical guidance instead of generic wellness advice, the outcomes are completely different. He has also been clear about why so many people get stuck: the problem is usually diagnostic. If you don't have an accurate map of what's actually driving your symptoms, even good interventions underperform. This community — and practitioners like Josh — exist to give you that clarity.

And he brings all of it with the same warmth and patience he brings to everything. Josh is genuinely, deeply kind. In a field where egos can run hot — especially among people with this level of expertise — his humility and his care for every single question are what stand out. He treats your question like it matters, because to him, it does.

"If you're at least open to the possibility of transformative healing, you create an avenue for that healing to arrive. Very likely, you do not just have to live with it."

— Dr. Joshua Park, DSOM, L.Ac

I'll leave you with the message Josh most wants people living with chronic illness to hear, because it captures him perfectly. Don't lose hope. So many people feel like their condition is just something they have to live with — something that will never really go away. But as Josh says, if you are at least open to the possibility of transformative change, you create an avenue for healing to arrive. Very likely, you do not just have to live with it. There are things that can be done to improve your quality of life, naturally.

That's Dr. Josh Park. Brilliant, accomplished, and quietly one of the best in his field — and genuinely one of the kindest, most generous people I've had the privilege to know. If you're part of this community, he's one of the reasons you're in very good hands.
