Chorus FAQ: Restoring Your Microbiome with Herbs
Chorus FAQ: Restoring Your Microbiome with Herbs
Straight answers about Chorus — how to take it, what to expect, who it's for, and the clinical thinking behind a formula built to restore terrain, not just quiet symptoms.
By Brehan Crawford, MAcOM, LAc

Most gut products pick a side. Chorus restores the terrain.
The supplement aisle gives you two options: antibiotics that kill bacteria, or probiotics that add them. Both treat the microbiome as a battlefield. After more than 20 years in clinical practice, I've come to see it differently — the gut is an ecology, and the modern Western diet plus a long list of common medications have steadily degraded that ecology. The result is the bloating, food sensitivity, irregularity, and brain fog so many people are told to simply live with.
Chorus is built on Bao He Wan, a classical Chinese formula used for centuries to resolve food stagnation and restore healthy digestion. It doesn't carpet-bomb your microbiome or flood it with strains that may not survive the trip. It works on the conditions — clearing what's stuck, supporting digestive secretion, and nourishing the environment where your own beneficial microbes can recover. Below are the questions I get asked most often, answered directly.
This FAQ covers: dosage & how to take it · side effects & what to expect · results timing · pregnancy, breastfeeding & children · what Chorus actually does · ingredients · storage & precautions.
Taking Chorus
How often should I take Chorus?
The standard dose is one to two capsules, three times daily. As with any supplement, it's best to confirm what's right for you with your own healthcare provider — particularly if you're managing a chronic condition or taking prescription medication.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
Take it when you remember. If your next dose is close, simply skip the missed one and carry on with your normal schedule — there's no need to double up.
How should Chorus be stored?
Keep it in a cool, dry place, and use it within a reasonable time once opened to preserve potency. Refrigeration can help maintain freshness, especially in warm climates.
Side Effects & Results
Are there side effects?
Chorus is a botanical formula and is generally well tolerated. As your microbiome begins to shift, some people notice temporary changes in bowel movements or a brief increase in burping or gas. This usually settles within one to two weeks as your gut adjusts.
How soon will I notice results?
Results vary from person to person. Many people report improvements in digestion within one to two weeks. Because we're restoring terrain rather than masking symptoms, I generally recommend staying consistent for at least three months to give the underlying ecology time to recover.
What if my symptoms get worse after I start?
Occasionally people feel a short-lived uptick in digestive symptoms as the microbiome rebalances. If that happens, lower your dose until things settle, or pause and restart at a smaller amount once you're feeling better. If symptoms are significant or persistent, stop and check in with your healthcare provider.
When TCM "Spleen deficiency" meets the gut-brain axis
A 2024 study in Neurogastroenterology & Motility examined polysaccharides from Atractylodes — a chief herb in the spleen-supporting tradition Chorus draws on — in a model of "Spleen deficiency" constipation. The polysaccharides reduced gastrointestinal transit time and increased stool output by reshaping the gut microbiota and influencing serotonin (5-HT) signaling. In other words, a classical "Spleen" herb measurably acts along the gut-brain axis at the level of microbes and neurotransmitters.

Purpose, Benefits & Ingredients
What's the primary purpose of Chorus?
Chorus is designed to counter the toll that the modern Western diet and common prescription medications take on the gut — supporting healthy digestion by helping clear stagnation and restoring a more balanced internal terrain.
What does Chorus support?
In traditional terms, the formula helps clear phlegm and resolve food stagnation, while supporting the body's own beneficial microbes. Many people use it to support comfortable digestion, regularity, and resilience against the effects of a less-than-ideal diet. For a deeper look at the mechanisms, see What Does Chorus Actually Do?
What makes the ingredients special?
Chorus is built on the lineage of Bao He Wan and uses high-quality botanicals — often sustainably wild-crafted or sourced from small family farms. Herbs like Atractylodes, Mu Xiang (Aucklandia), and Coix seed each play a specific role, from supporting digestive secretion to promoting healthy motility. This is pattern-based medicine: the herbs are chosen to work together on the terrain, not as isolated single actions.
Can Chorus help with weight or other concerns?
Chorus is a digestive and microbiome-support formula, not a weight-loss product. That said, when digestion improves and the gut terrain becomes healthier, some people find it easier to make progress on broader goals alongside a balanced diet and regular movement. People dealing with skin issues, food intolerances, sinus congestion, or mold-related complaints sometimes report improvement as gut health improves — but these are individual experiences, not guaranteed outcomes, and Chorus is not a treatment for any specific condition.
