Your Gut, Heart & Brain Are Talking — Synchrony Skool Group
Your Gut, Heart & Brain
Are Talking Right Now.
When that three-way signal falls silent — you feel it everywhere. Here's how to restore the rhythm.
"The pulse of the tides, the heartbeat of the earth, and the quiet wave between your heart and your mind."
When rhythm slips out of tune, life feels heavy.
I've been a practitioner long enough to recognize the pattern before the patient finishes their intake form. Fatigue that sleep doesn't touch. Moods that swing without warning. Opportunities that seem to pass by while you stand there watching. Anxiety that won't settle. A general sense that your body is working against you rather than with you.
What I want to say to every one of those patients — and what I want to say to you right now — is this: you are not broken. Your inner signal has gone quiet. And there is a reason for that silence, and a way back to resonance.
Modern science has spent the last two decades catching up with what traditional Chinese medicine has practiced for five thousand years. Your gut, your heart, and your brain are not separate systems politely sharing a body. They are engaged in a continuous, bidirectional conversation — a living dialogue that shapes your immunity, your focus, your emotional regulation, and your very sense of belonging in the world. When that conversation falters, it doesn't look like a single diagnosis. It looks like IBS, chronic pain, dysautonomia, MCAS, or anxiety that medication barely touches. These are not the disease. They are echoes of a disrupted signal.
"These are only echoes of a deeper reaction to a chaotic world. The real work is restoring the signal — not suppressing the echo."
— Brehan Crawford, MAcOM, LAcUnderstanding the Gut-Heart-Brain Axis
Most people have heard of the gut-brain axis. But the conversation doesn't stop at two. There is a third voice — and it may be the most important one. Your heart is not simply a pump. It is a sophisticated sensory organ with its own intrinsic nervous system, containing around 40,000 neurons capable of sensing, processing, and transmitting information independently of the brain. The heart communicates with the brain continuously through neural, hormonal, and electromagnetic pathways — and that signal travels upward more than it travels down.
The vagus nerve is the great translator in this system. Roughly 80% of its fibers carry information to the brain from the body — from the gut, from the heart, from the diaphragm. Your brain is largely listening to your gut and your heart. It is responding to the state of your terrain. This is why you cannot think your way out of a dysregulated nervous system. You have to work with the body first.
The enteric nervous system — sometimes called the "second brain" — contains over 500 million neurons lining the GI tract and produces approximately 90% of the body's serotonin. Disruptions in gut microbiome diversity have been directly linked to altered vagal tone, HRV reduction, heightened anxiety, and inflammatory dysregulation far beyond the digestive tract.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) — the beat-to-beat variation in your heart rhythm — is now recognized as one of the most sensitive biomarkers of autonomic nervous system health. Low HRV is associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, depression, poor immune function, and reduced resilience to stress. Crucially, HRV can be improved through targeted breathing practice and gut microbiome restoration.

In traditional Chinese medicine, this web of influence was never in dispute. The concept of Shen — heart-mind — has always described an integrated cognitive and emotional intelligence residing in the heart, nourished by the blood, grounded in the gut. When the Spleen and Stomach are strong, the Shen is clear. When the gut is disordered, the spirit becomes restless. The language is different. The map is the same.
Three Secrets of Synchrony
Your Gut Is Where Your Second Brain Lives
It produces most of your serotonin, manages a massive share of your immune surveillance, and is the primary energy producer for every cell downstream. When the gut microbiome loses diversity — through stress, antibiotics, processed food, or unresolved infection — everything above it loses signal clarity. Thoughts become foggy. Feelings become trapped. The garden needs tending before the ecosystem can breathe again.
The Heart Is the Tuning Fork
When the heart's rhythm is coherent, the nervous system follows. When the nervous system follows, the gut relaxes. Breath is the only autonomic function you can consciously control — and it is the fastest way to shift your heart-brain conversation from threat mode into repair mode. Slow, rhythmic breathing at around five to six breath cycles per minute entrains heart rate variability, activates vagal tone, and lowers the inflammatory tide. This is not relaxation. This is recalibration.
Your Health Doesn't End in Your Own Body
Neuroscience calls it coherence — the same frequency that allows schools of fish or flocks of birds to move as one. When your own rhythm stabilizes, you begin to synchronize with others. Healing that happens in community is qualitatively different from healing in isolation. The more we resonate together, the more resilient each of us becomes. This is not metaphor. It is measurable.
Restoring the Microbiome: Where Real Change Begins
I am not interested in suppression. I never have been. You do not solve an ecosystem problem by carpet-bombing its inhabitants. You restore ecological balance — you reintroduce what is missing, you clear what has overgrown, and you feed what needs to grow. That is the philosophy behind everything I do clinically, and it is the philosophy behind Gut Harmony.
Our Chorus Capsules bring together a carefully sourced botanical formula developed from both modern microbiome research and classical Chinese herbal traditions. These are not random herbs thrown together in a capsule. They are compounds with documented effects on microbial diversity, intestinal motility, mucosal integrity, and — critically — the signaling pathways that connect your gut to your brain and heart. When the gut begins to flow, the whole body begins to listen again.

Botanical microbiome support rooted in 5,000 years of clinical tradition — formulated by Brehan Crawford, MAcOM, LAc, and sourced from sustainable, small-batch suppliers.
Breathwork: Tuning the Heart-Nervous System Conversation
Here is the thing about breathing that most people miss: it is not about relaxation. It is about regulation. The diaphragm is a direct mechanical pump for the vagus nerve. Every slow, full exhale stimulates the parasympathetic branch of your autonomic nervous system — the branch responsible for digestion, immune balance, cellular repair, and emotional coherence. When you breathe shallowly and rapidly, as most chronically ill people do, you are constantly feeding a low-grade threat signal into your heart and brain. When you breathe slowly and deliberately, you interrupt that signal.
Coherent Breathing — 5 Minutes Daily
Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 5 seconds. Exhale gently through your nose or slightly parted lips for a count of 5 seconds. No pause. No force. Just a continuous, tide-like cycle.
Do this for five minutes before food, before sleep, or any time anxiety rises. You are not suppressing the anxiety — you are retraining the underlying signal that generates it.
In our Chorus Circle community, we pair this practice with HRV tracking and heart coherence training using EEG feedback — giving you measurable proof of your own progress.
Combine breathwork with a restored microbiome and something remarkable happens. The gut produces serotonin more consistently. The heart rate variability improves. The nervous system spends more time in parasympathetic rest — which is where healing actually occurs. Intuition sharpens. You begin to sense what you need before the symptom even appears. The body stops being a liability and starts being an ally.
"When your brain and gut relearn their language, intuition sharpens. You sense what you need before the symptom appears — and the world begins to bring it to you."
— Brehan Crawford, MAcOM, LAcHealing in Community Changes the Equation
There is a concept in neuroscience called interpersonal coherence — the measurable synchronization of physiological rhythms between people in close proximity or sustained relationship. When individuals in a group all work to stabilize their own heart-brain axis, their nervous systems begin to entrain with one another. The whole group becomes more resilient. This is not mysticism. It is the same phenomenon that allows schools of fish to turn as one, or flocks of starlings to move as a single fluid form across the sky.
This is why I believe community is not optional in this work. It is part of the medicine. Within our Chorus Circle community, that coherence happens between practitioners and patients, between people with different diagnoses who share the same underlying disruption, between healers of many traditions moving in shared direction. Coincidences stop feeling accidental. Doors that were closed begin to open. Internal balance meets external opportunity — and both improve together.
A dream team of clinicians who bridge tradition and evidence-based practice — together, in one place.
Practitioners with deep roots in botanical medicine, helping you work with food and herbs as real medicine.
Measurable heart-brain coherence work, guided and tracked so you can see your own nervous system changing.
